08 March 2021 The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic is threatening the lives and rights of refugee, displaced and stateless women and girls.

The alarm was raised by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, on the occasion of International Women's Day.

"The unprecedented socio-economic impact of the pandemic is putting many lives in jeopardy. We are seeing an extremely worrying increase in reports of gender-based violence, including cases of domestic violence, forced marriages, child labor and teenage pregnancies," she said. the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi.

According to Grandi, "the international community must take a step forward and help protect the rights of displaced and stateless women and girls. This implies support for humanitarian programs that combat gender inequality, including gender-based violence. and also the expansion of education programs and professional and self-reliance initiatives. Such initiatives must also be included in the socio-economic support packages that governments are planning and implementing. "

According to UNHCR, "despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic which fuels gender inequalities and increases the risks of violence against women and girls, prevention and response programs are still severely underfunded" and is for this reason it "urges governments to pay urgent attention to these risks and to support the full involvement and leadership of refugee, displaced and stateless women in response and recovery plans".
