Saarbrücken (AP) - Dozens of dead and neglected cats have been discovered in a gazebo in Saarbrücken.

In the building, among other things, around 150 to 200 animal carcasses were found in garbage bags, as the police in Saarbrücken announced on Monday.

In addition, 32 neglected cats have so far been captured on the "completely littered property" around the garden house and brought to the animal shelter.

Several criminal charges were filed against the 73-year-old owner of the gazebo under the Animal Welfare Act, it said.

The investigation continued.

A witness had alerted the police and the animal health service on Sunday after his dog ran into the property.

The dog owner had heard "a pitiful scream from several cats" from the house, the police said.

He also noticed a “strong smell of putrefaction”.

The building was forcibly opened by the professional fire brigade.

The disposal of the animal carcasses was so extensive on Sunday that it should be continued on Monday, it said.

The responsible state office for consumer protection as well as other employees of the Saarbrücken animal shelter were informed.
