Philippsburg (dpa / lsw) - In Baden-Württemberg, the course has been set for the dismantling of nuclear power plants in the state.

Two years before the last nuclear reactor was shut down, another so-called residue processing center (RBZ) at the Philippsburg site started work, the Ministry of the Environment announced on Monday.

Radioactive waste is cleaned there and then temporarily stored.

"This means that all the systems that we need for the rapid and safe dismantling of the nuclear power plants in Baden-Württemberg are now in operation," said Environment Minister Franz Untersteller (Greens).

This is an important milestone and makes Baden-Württemberg a nationwide pioneer when it comes to dismantling.

In the residual processing centers in the south-west, the materials that have to be disposed of as radioactive waste are separated from other components that arise during dismantling and cleaned.

This low to medium level radioactive waste is then temporarily stored at the sites until the Konrad repository is operational.

Four out of five nuclear power plants operated by EnBW are being dismantled: the Obrigheim nuclear power plant, Block I in Neckarwestheim and both blocks in Philippsburg.

Block II in Neckarwestheim is only allowed to produce electricity until the end of 2022.
