Cologne / Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - North Rhine-Westphalia's Environment Minister Ursula Heinen-Esser (CDU) has criticized the large amount of garbage caused by disposable packaging in the corona lockdown.

Unfortunately, the pandemic has led to “a renaissance in single-use packaging”, she told the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger” (Monday).

In a modern and responsible society, carelessly disposed of plastic waste has no place.

"Anyone planning to buy something to-go on a trip or walk should have their own reusable cup or plate in their luggage," the paper quotes the minister as saying.

The cities should punish violations consistently.

"For illegal waste disposal, such as careless throwing away of plastic and paper waste, the catalog of fines recommends the municipalities to pay a fine of at least 100 euros," recalled Heinen-Esser.

In order to sustainably reduce packaging waste, the introduction of a mandatory deposit on one-way packaging is necessary.
