Moscow (dpa) - The German astronaut Matthias Maurer is expected to complete an external mission during his planned stay in the International Space Station.

The 50-year-old from Saarland will probably wear a Russian space suit, said René Pischel, representative of the European Space Agency Esa in Moscow, of the Russian space agency Roskosmos magazine.

The last time in 2009, the US astronaut Michael Barratt, a foreigner wore a Russian protective suit around 400 kilometers above the earth.

With the planned exit, the European robotic arm Era and the Russian research module Nauka are to be put into operation.

Both have yet to be brought into space.

The next launch of a Russian cargo spaceship is planned for the end of June - three months later than originally planned, the state agency Tass reported.

After successfully docking with the ISS, several spacecraft missions are planned for the commissioning of the module and the robotic arm, Pischel told the German press agency.

"Matthias Maurer, who will fly to the ISS in a Space-X spaceship in autumn, will probably be involved in one of them."

On board the ISS there are four spacesuits in the Russian and four US segments for use by space travelers outside the station.

The aging ISS has been struggling with problems for months - for example with leaking air and a drop in pressure.

Only at the weekend did the crew seal a leak around 4.5 centimeters long.

Work began on Monday to plug another leak.

Russia wants to leave the space station in space by 2028.
