Münster (AP) - After a fatal drive in the Münsterland, the trial against a 44-year-old woman begins on Monday (9 a.m.) in front of the Münster district court.

The accused is considered to be mentally ill and therefore incapable of guilt.

The only question in the proceedings is therefore whether she is a danger to the general public and therefore has to be placed in a closed psychiatric clinic for an indefinite period.

In September 2020, the 44-year-old is said to have committed several traffic accidents while driving a seemingly aimless car between Lengerich and Lienen in Münsterland.

According to the public prosecutor's office, she is said to have hit and injured a couple who were traveling on pedelecs.

A short time later, she is said to have swerved into the opposite lane on a country road and approached three cyclists at high speed.

A 47-year-old man was so seriously injured in the collision that he died at the scene of the accident.

The accused also suffered serious injuries when her small car crashed into a tree.

The investigations have shown that the 44-year-old has been suffering from a mental illness for years.

A psychiatric expert came to the conclusion in the run-up to the trial that at the time of the offense she was not in a position to control her actions and to understand the injustice of her act.
