Duisburg (dpa / lnw) - A 38-year-old man is soon on trial for allegedly beating his few months old son and covering his mouth and nose until he suffered irreparable brain damage.
The infant was taken to the hospital where it was determined to be brain dead.
The manslaughter trial against the father will begin on April 20, said a spokesman for the Duisburg Regional Court on Monday.
The boy's mother had died giving birth in July of last year, and the father has looked after the baby on his own ever since.
On October 14, 2020, the father had already consumed alcohol at noon, according to the indictment.
Around 8 p.m. he put the child to sleep and continued drinking.
He later hit the baby, said the court spokesman - among other things, the boy suffered a broken lower jaw.
Why the father attacked the baby was initially unclear.
The defendant has not yet commented on this, said the court spokesman.
The "Bild" newspaper reported first.
