Bergen (dpa / mv) - After a recent outbreak of avian influenza in the Vorpommern-Rügen district, around 230 privately owned animals were killed.

Most of the chickens, but also ducks and geese, said a spokeswoman for the district on Monday.

The district had previously informed in a message about the outbreak near Bergen on Rügen.

A restricted area and an observation area within a radius of three and ten kilometers were established around the city.

In the entire district, keepers have to keep their poultry in stables or sheltered because of the rampant avian influenza.

Further hygiene requirements apply in the restricted areas and observation areas.
