Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The indebtedness of troubled companies has increased significantly in the past year.

As the statistics office IT.NRW announced on Monday, the 17,866 companies in North Rhine-Westphalia that filed for insolvency proceedings last year came to expected claims from creditors amounting to 8.9 billion euros.

That was almost twice as much as in the previous year, when 4.8 billion euros were listed as debt.

This is unusual, especially since almost a third (29.1 percent) fewer companies had filed for bankruptcy.

In 2019 there were 25 198.

So fewer companies go to court, but they have significantly more liabilities on their books.

This contrary development is due to the corona pandemic.

In order to prevent a wave of bankruptcies, the federal government largely suspended the obligation to file for insolvency last year.

In addition, the significantly increased volume of claims is due to the fact that the companies that presented to the local courts were on average larger than before.
