The Dalai Lama refused to receive the syringe at home in his home in Dharamsala, but wanted to visit the hospital himself and have himself photographed when he received the vaccine, thus making his first public appearance in more than a year.

-I took (the vaccine) because I want to show that more people can have the courage to get an injection, says the 85-year-old in a video posted on Youtube.

-This syringe is very, very helpful in preventing serious problems.

India began vaccinating its over 1.3 billion inhabitants in mid-January.

According to the Times of India, 18 million doses have been distributed so far, but the vaccination has been met with some skepticism in some states and to get more people to take the vaccine, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also photographed this week when he received a syringe.

On Saturday, close to 19,000 new infections were registered in India, the highest daily figure since early January.

In total, just over 11 million Indians have been found infected and nearly 158,000 have died since contracting covid-19.
