07 March 2021Swiss voters have pronounced themselves in favor of the ban on the full veil, the Swiss country will ban the burqa in public places and other veils that cover the face, such as the niqab, worn by women of Islamic faith.

This is the result of the referendum on the subject, in which over 52 percent of voters voted in favor of the ban.

The results of 19 of the 22 cantons surveyed so far indicate a clear result in this regard.

The referendum "Yes to the prohibition of concealing one's face", or anti-burqa initiative, as it was called, wanted to prohibit the concealment of the face in public spaces and was promoted by numerous representatives of the Democratic Union of the Center (UDC / conservative right) while the government and parliament considered the initiative excessive, given the low number of cases of burqa or niqab in Switzerland.

According to the Government and the Parliament it is necessary to work for the protection of women, but not in this way;

in addition, the responsibility for concealment lies primarily with the cantons.

In Switzerland, the burqa and niqab are banned only in two cantons: Ticino and St. Gallen.

The outcome of the referendum will now have to be incorporated into federal legislation.

Since this is a constitutional amendment, to be approved the popular initiative will have to obtain a double majority of the people and the cantons.

According to the national public broadcaster SRG, the margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
