Atlético led for a long time but were joined by Real 1-1 at the end of Sunday's game in the Madrid derby counting for Matchday 26 of La Liga, but keep three points ahead of 2nd, Barcelona, and five on Real (3rd).
Diego Simeone's men opened the scoring early in the match with an outside right-footed goal from Luis Suarez (15th), but returning Karim Benzema equalized late in the game (88th) after a combination with Casemiro in the box, to allow Real to stay in the title race.
