Situation in Senegal: a death on Saturday in the Kolda region

Still tense atmosphere in Senegal since the arrest of political opponent Ousmane Sonko, for "disturbing public order".

Violence was thus reported yesterday in the Casamance region in the south of the country, stronghold of the deputy who is also accused of rape and threats.

The national gendarmerie reports one death and two wounded at the hospital in Kolda, in the south of the country, where demonstrations took place yesterday, Saturday, March 6.

No more details for the moment, the gendarmerie indicates that an investigation is underway.

Rampages

The young man is said to have died in Diaobé, in the same region, where the premises and vehicles of the gendarmerie brigade were ransacked on Saturday during violent demonstrations, according to the national gendarmerie.

The Senegalese press agency speaks, for its part, of six injuries and significant damage.

This Sunday at midday, no incidents were reported in Dakar but the traces of the latest riots are still visible ... Remnants of burnt tires, burnt out Auchan storefront, stones and debris littered on the roadway ... Several supermarkets have lowered the curtain, motorists still line up at gas stations.

Multiple interventions by the Red Cross

The Red Cross recorded 143 wounded, 45 evacuations and 2 deaths directly linked to the demonstrations of last Friday, March 5, in the department of Dakar, in particular in the sectors of Medina and Colobane.
