Stig Malm was born in 1942 in Sundbyberg outside Stockholm and was a trained instrument maker.

After joining a trade union in the then Metal Industry Workers' Union, he became chairman of LO between 1983–1993.

The current Prime Minister Stefan Löfven is also an old Metallare.

"We share a union background in IF Metall and I got to know him as an ideologically clear and distinct representative of the Swedish labor movement," writes Stefan Löfven in a comment to TT.

“For ten years, Stig Malm was an outspoken LO chairman who always defended and thought of the best interests of the individual members.

For him, the fight for full employment was a priority and when he later became a Social Democratic municipal politician, he continued that fight ", Löfven continues.

"My thoughts are with his children and grandchildren," writes Löfven.
