Saarbrücken / Mainz (dpa / lrs) - In Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate, animal welfare is also becoming more and more important during slaughter.

To save cattle and pigs from stress and anxiety, farmers are looking for alternatives to transport and slaughterhouses.

They have their animals killed directly on the farm or - as in Rhineland-Palatinate - cattle with a bullet in the pasture.

According to its own statements, the Saarland Ministry of the Environment supports projects for regional marketing in the area of regional meat production.

The acquisition of a mobile poultry slaughterhouse is being funded, as is the construction of a slaughterhouse in Perl.

"Short distances and a favorable energy balance also contribute to climate protection and animal welfare," said Environment Minister Reinhold Jost (SPD).

In addition, the demand for regional products is high and the Saarlanders' interest in high-quality food is “unbroken”.

The head of department at the Rhineland-Palatinate Chamber of Agriculture, Elisabeth Seemer, explained: "Cattle and pigs straight from the farm have not only been in increasing demand since Corona."

She has the impression that “as the amount of meat consumption declines among large groups of consumers, the producer's need for meat increases”.
