Dresden (dpa / sn) - In a cross-border project on the spread of coronavirus variants, samples from Saxony, the Czech Republic and Poland will be analyzed in Dresden in the future.

Starting on Monday, 150 tests are to be collected and sequenced at the University Hospital every week.

"The sequencing will help us to get an even more precise overview of the occurrence and spread of mutations and, if necessary, to adapt appropriate protective measures," said Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) on Sunday.

"The coronavirus can only be fought together."

The federal government supports the project financially.

The results from Dresden are to be made available to various specialist institutes, but also to political decision-makers.

It is planned to expand the project to Bavaria, it said.
