Stuttgart / Oberammergaue (dpa) - The director and theater director Christian Stückl has received the renowned Buber-Rosenzweig Medal for his commitment against Christian anti-Judaism.
The medal was presented to Stückl on Sunday in Stuttgart at an award ceremony with a selected audience.
The 59-year-old had the Oberammergau Passion Play "revised step by step with patience and perseverance" and stood up against anti-Semitism and racism, the jury praised him.
In addition, in many of his productions, Stückl has dealt with the relationship between religions and is committed to an open and plural society.
The award ceremony is also intended to “send a clear and public signal against anti-Semitism and for democratic coexistence in these troubled times,” said the German Coordination Council of the Societies for Christian-Jewish Cooperation (DKR).

In 1987, Stückl became the youngest director of the Passion, which is performed every ten years, and staged it for the first time in 1990. He will stage it for the fourth time in 2022 - two years later than planned due to Corona.
The honorary citizen of Oberammergau, who is also the artistic director of the Munich Volkstheater, has renewed his passion in many ways.
In particular, he freed them from anti-Semitic traits.
The DKR has been awarding the Buber-Rosenzweig Medal since 1968 to people who work for understanding between Jews and Christians.
The award commemorates the Jewish philosophers Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig.
Previous winners include the former Federal Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, the conductor Daniel Barenboim and the rock musician Peter Maffay.
Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) should receive the award in March of last year in Dresden - but the event was canceled, as was the second scheduled award.
