Berlin (dpa / bb) - On the disused Spreepark amusement area in Berlin-Treptow, further renovation work will begin this Tuesday.

The Mero Hall is to be converted into an art and cultural space by 2024, as announced by the Grün Berlin company.

At the time of the "Plänterwald Cultural Park" in the GDR, it housed a restaurant.

The ailing parts of the hall roof are to be dismantled by the end of March.

The supporting structure is being renovated.

The destination is an open-air venue.

The Spreepark was the only large amusement park in the east.

It opened in 1969.

In 2001 the park was closed and the site fell into disrepair.

In 2014 the Berlin Liegenschaftsfonds bought the Spreepark.

Grün Berlin is working on a new start in 2022. Two years later, when the core area opens, the Ferris wheel is also set to turn again.

The renovation costs are expected to be around four million euros.
