Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - 47 women are currently sitting in the Hessian state parliament, a quota of around 34.3 percent.

This was announced by the President of the State Parliament Boris Rhein (CDU) on the occasion of International Women's Day on March 8th.

Accordingly, the proportion of the female population in Hesse is currently 50.6 percent.

"There is certainly still room for improvement, but the trend is increasing compared to previous election periods," said Rhein.

At the moment, the proportion of women MPs is higher than ever before.

In the first legislative period of the Hessian state parliament from 1946 to 1950, the proportion of women was just under 7 percent, according to the communication.

In the tenth legislative period from 1982 to 1983, the proportion of women in parliament rose to a double-digit number for the first time.

At that time, 11.8 percent of the MPs were women.

A total of 137 people currently sit in the Hessian state parliament.
