Rostock / Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Preparations for the planned opening next Monday are in full swing in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania zoos.

«The anticipation is huge.

Not only our zoo team, the animals also miss the crowd, ”said zoo director Udo Nagel.

The hygiene concept has already proven itself after the first corona lockdown.

It provides for the opening of the outside areas, for example, the animal houses remain closed.

The attractions will probably be the young animals that were born in the past few months.

This includes the jaguar girl Yuna, born in August, she is the first young of the parents Miranda and Yuma.

The dwarf river baby Taya, born in October, will also be among the stars.

The hippos moved into the former elephant enclosure in 2015.

“Now is the time for our gardeners to sow the spring seeds,” said Nagel.

There is maintenance work to be carried out on all systems, such as replacing wood chips and bark mulch for the polar bears.

The technicians would also have their hands full.

Seating would be changed, the cable car on the butterfly meadow still has to be installed.

"New experience stations are being set up with cheetahs and seabirds."

The Schwerin zoo boss Tim Schikora is even more reserved in his anticipation.

The reason for this is the higher infection rate in the state capital.

While the seven-day incidence per 100,000 inhabitants is currently 21, it is well over 50 in Schwerin. This is the reason why, from Monday, initially only 4500 annual ticket holders will be admitted.

The zoo is not due to open to everyone until a week later.

The long-awaited lion ladies "Rubi", "Heidi" and "Indi" from England have not yet arrived, the lion tomcat "Shapur" is also waiting.

And if you look closely, you can spot the giraffes.

"We are currently completing the outdoor area," said Schikora.

"The Marlow bird park is open, that is the most important news," said park spokeswoman Franzi Haase.

The houses such as the tropical house are still closed.

"We are not yet in our main season," emphasized Haase.

Things should really get going at the end of March.
