Nove Mesto (dpa) - Inspired by the first relay victory in over four years, Arnd Peiffer has provided the next highlight at the Biathlon World Cup in Nove Mesto.

The Olympic champion ran the ten-kilometer sprint to an excellent third place and only missed his eleventh World Cup victory by 4.4 seconds.

After the disappointing World Championships, in which Peiffer had won the only medal as second in the individual, Benedikt Doll (30) also convinced in sixth and Erik Lesser (32) in 14th.

«I know where I left the time, my standing shooting was a little too long.

But the podium is always a nice thing and something special, ”said Peiffer after his fifth individual podium this season on ZDF.

In the second shooting, Peiffer was 6.2 seconds slower than the victorious Simon Desthieux with 27.9 seconds.

In his first World Cup victory, the French distanced Sebastian from Sweden, who was also faultless, by just 2.4 seconds.

This means that the protégés of national coach Mark Kirchner will go into the pursuit on Sunday (4 p.m. / ZDF and Eurosport) with very good prospects.

One day after the brilliant start-to-finish victory in the team, Doll also had the chance to win.

But the first shot in the standing position slipped out too quickly for the ex-world champion and so the 30-year-old was 14.5 seconds behind first place.

«That was a technical error, it would have been zero.

That can't happen, ”said Doll.

Lesser, who is now on his way to normal form again after his disappointing World Cup and who had already shown this with his excellent relay performance on Friday, had to pay for something in terms of running.

There is still room for improvement.

But I like to take the World Cup points with me, ”said the Thuringian (+ 50.7).

On the other hand, Johannes Kühn experienced a pitch-black day, who missed all five targets after making a mistake while standing and then gave up the race disappointed.

Like Roman Rees (61), he is absent from the pursuit, the season finisher Philipp Nawrath was 53.

The women managed to make amends after their relay debacle, but they missed a podium despite good performances.

After a shooting error, Franziska Preuß and last year's winner Denise Herrmann finished eighth and tenth.

This also gave them a good position for the hunting races (12 noon / ZDF and Eurosport).

Preuss has to catch up to sprint winner Tiril Eckhoff by 25 seconds, Herrmann 29 seconds.

For the Norwegian world champion, it was the fifth sprint victory in a row with which the 30-year-old extended her lead in the overall World Cup.

"I managed to shoot a solid rhythm, but this one mistake is annoying," said Preuss.

That's pretty much the time for a penalty loop, without Preuss would have made it onto the podium.

Only seven of the 106 starters made it through without a mistake, so that the shooting performance of the Germans can be rated positively.

In the cross-country ski run, like in the relay disaster with twelfth place, it wasn't one hundred percent again.

Herrmann was still the best with the seventh running time.

The Saxon, who was spared because of an infection in the relay, was "really quite satisfied" in view of the training failure, especially with the shooting.

“In terms of running, it's not yet where I want to go and what I can do,” said the 32-year-old.

On the final lap she had a “small fall”, “even at the feet of my coach, I could have saved it,” said Herrmann.
