Rome (AP) - Italy wants to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the death of the national poet Dante Alighieri ("Divine Comedy") to the fullest, despite the corona pandemic.

There will be hundreds of readings, exhibitions and other events throughout the year in the Mediterranean country and internationally, said Minister of Culture Dario Franceschini at an online press conference on Saturday.

A highlight is planned for the regular Dante Day on March 25: Then Oscar winner Roberto Benigni will read Dante verses.

The appearance of the 68-year-old actor and director at the seat of the head of state, in the Quirinal Palace in Rome, is to be televised.

Dante was born in Florence, Tuscany, in 1265.

He died on September 14, 1321 in Ravenna in Emilia-Romagna.

An extensive festival program is planned for both cities.

One of the most important shows is scheduled to open in Forlì - a place between Florence and Ravenna - at the beginning of April.

In the capital, Rome, the Scuderie del Quirinale Museum is planning a show called “Inferno”.

It is scheduled to start on October 5th and run until January 2022.

Due to the corona pandemic in Italy, only museums in areas with a low corona risk are currently open.
