Wilhelmshaven (dpa / lni) - Environment Minister Olaf Lies (SPD) wants to use electricity from offshore wind power on the coast and is in favor of a transformer station with converter systems near the JadeWeserPort.

"Here we have the unique opportunity to become Germany's energy hub," said Lies in a statement with a view to Wilhelmshaven.

According to the network operator Tennet, the network development plan already provides for such a substation to be built in the north of the city.

The exact location is still open.

In future, even more energy is to be transported from offshore wind turbines in the German Bight and the systems on land via the high-voltage network through Lower Saxony to the south and west of Germany.

"But not every kilowatt-hour produced," said Lies, who is also a member of the state parliament for the region.

In the future, wind energy could also be used for the production of green hydrogen or for local industry.

In addition, green hydrogen or green methanol can be imported via the port.

According to Tennet, a 36 hectare area is currently being sought for the planned substation.

Four areas have been identified for this, but only two are actually considered.

One is near the district of Sengwarden, the other just a few kilometers away on the so-called Voslapper Groden near the JadeWeserPort.

Lies now favors the area near the port in a statement.

"The location is ideal for me and I want to discuss it with the local council, the citizens, the business community and, above all, Tennet," said Lies.

According to local media reports, there are also protests from the population against the Sengwarden location.

However, the Voslapper Groden is still part of the Natura 2000 bird sanctuary.

Lies spoke out in favor of “pragmatic solutions”.

Compensation areas would then have to be identified.

Tennet now also wants to talk to politicians and residents.

"We are still at the very beginning," said a Tennet spokesman with a view to the location search.

There are still several months to make a decision, it said.
