Schwerin / Stralsund (dpa / mv) - inmates of the correctional facility in Stralsund (Vorpommern-Rügen district) can now apply for their identity card directly in prison.

The public order office comes to the institution with the so-called digital citizen box and then takes care of the formalities, as the Ministry of Justice announced on Saturday in Schwerin.

Before that, every prisoner was taken to the public order office.

"Prisoners who are three months before their release from prison can apply for an identity card if it has expired or can no longer be found," said Justice Minister Katy Hoffmeister (CDU) in a statement.

This is important when preparing for discharge.

According to the Stralsund prison, four prisoners have registered for the start.

The necessary passport photos would then also be taken in the prison.
