Mülheim / Essen (dpa) - The discounter Aldi was surprised by the rush for the first Corona self-tests in retail on Saturday.

"As expected, the items that we had in store in the stores were sold out in most of our stores in the morning," said Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord.

Interest in the tests "surprised the discounter with this intensity".

Aldi asked customers who missed out for their understanding.

The next deliveries are expected in the new week.

The discounter had already pointed out in advance that the promotional goods could be sold out on the first day of the promotion.

Competitor Lidl and the Rewe and Edeka supermarkets also want to start selling soon.

The drugstore chains Rossmann and dm are planning the start for Tuesday.

Pharmacies also want to offer the products.
