Mülheim / Essen / Neckarsulm (dpa) - The discounters Aldi and Lidl were surprised by the huge rush for the first Corona self-tests in retail on Saturday.

"As expected, the items that we had in store in the stores were sold out in most of our stores in the morning," said Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord.

Interest in the tests "surprised the discounter with this intensity".

At competitor Lidl, which initially only offered the rapid tests online, the website collapsed at times.

On request, the Neckarsulm group announced: "Due to the current high number of visitors to our online shop, access is sometimes limited for a short time."

Lidl apologized to its customers.

They are working on “restoring the usual service as quickly as possible and in full”.

Aldi also asked customers who missed out for their understanding.

The next deliveries are expected in the new week.

The discounter had already pointed out in advance that the promotional goods could be sold out on the first day of the promotion.
