In Mexico, this Thursday, March 4, a pre-candidate for mayor of La Perla, a small town located in the state of Veracruz, was assassinated.

This former mayor who was running for a new term in the next elections is the 65th victim among the political class and especially the candidates since September 2020, if we stick to the figures communicated by the authorities.

José Melquiades Vázquez was in the running for a new term at La Perla.

But while he was traveling this Thursday in his vehicle with his wife, he was allegedly murdered by heavily armed men who were traveling in another vehicle.

A crime made public only a few hours after the announcement by the Mexican president of the establishment of a plan to strengthen the security of candidates in the next legislative and regional elections.

According to Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, 64 candidates, before the assassination of José Melquiades Vazquez, were killed between September 2020 and February 2021. Crimes that most often go unpunished and which, according to the authorities, are the work of cartels that are trying to increase the pressure before the elections scheduled for next June, and thus increase their influence.

If the State of Veracruz is particularly affected, it is far from being the only one.

The states of Guerrero, Oaxaca, Baja California, Jalisco, Guanajuato and Morelos are also particularly under scrutiny by authorities who seem overwhelmed.
