Braunschweig (dpa / lni) - When developing an effective drug against Covid-19, a Braunschweig company is about to start the first clinical test phase.
From March to probably July, a total of 45 patients with moderate to severe disease progression will take part in the test phase in six clinical centers nationwide, as the city of Braunschweig announced on Friday.
For the project, the company received financial support from the state of Lower Saxony and from private investors.
To finance another test phase and to expand production of the drug, a total of around 50 million euros would be required.
"The rapid development of a drug for treating the disease by Corat Therapeutics has convinced me," said Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil, who is also chairman of the SPD district of Braunschweig.
The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Research should now, in addition to the procurement of the vaccine, also take care of the development of a drug to alleviate the course of the disease, Heil demanded.
Corat now needs a strong partner from the pharmaceutical industry, said Prime Minister Stephan Weil.
