Bad Hersfeld (dpa / lhe) - The theater and television actor Götz Schubert takes on the leading role in the stage version of the Hollywood film "The Club of Dead Poets" at this year's Bad Hersfeld Festival.

Schubert will play the role of the teacher John Keating, announced the festival on Friday.

Its director Joern Hinkel had written his own version of the Oscar-winning film with the film's scriptwriter, Tom Schulman.

On June 25th it will be shown as a European premiere in the monastery ruins.

Schubert has been awarded the German Television Prize and the Grimme Prize several times.

"I visited Götz Schubert over a year and a half ago after one of his performances in the Hamburg Schauspielhaus and reported about my plans for the European premiere of the Club of the Dead Poets in Bad Hersfeld," explained Hinkel.

"He was immediately enthusiastic and told me what great importance the film had for him at the time of the reunification."

A collaboration with Schubert did not work in the summer of 2020 due to scheduling reasons, said Hinkel.

"So I am all the happier that he will now play the teacher Keating."

Advance sales for the Bad Hersfeld Festival started at the beginning of December.

For the 70th season, the makers have planned with restrictions due to the unclear development of the corona pandemic.

Fewer pieces would be put on stage than usual, Hinkel had explained.

The available space in the monastery ruins, which usually offers around 1,300 places, is to be limited to around 600.

The advance booking is going "to our satisfaction," said a spokeswoman for the festival.

For many events there are only remaining tickets.

But one does not give up hope that the situation will ease up by June and that more seats and tickets could be released.
