Death of George Floyd: The high-tension trial of ex-policeman Derek Chauvin begins Monday -

20 Minutes

Seven minutes, 46 seconds.

This is the length of time during which the knee of ex-policeman Derek Chauvin remained on George Floyd's neck on May 25, 2020. These images, which rocked America, were at the origin of the most great mobilization against racism since the 1960s and Martin Luther King.

Monday, the trial of the ex-police officer opens in Minneapolis with the selection of the jury, for a hearing start fixed for March 29.

Charged with "second degree murder", a charge qualifying a voluntary but not premeditated act, Derek Chauvin risks a maximum of 40 years in prison.

Concrete barriers, fences, barbed wire… The city of Minneapolis has prepared itself, with a court transformed into a fortress.

According to the mayor, 3,000 police officers and soldiers of the Republican Guard were mobilized.

The verdict is expected in late April or early May.
