Bad Vilbel (dpa) - The mineral water bottler Hassia has almost compensated for missing catering sales with additional sales in retail during the Corona crisis.

The group's sales fell by 0.8 percent to 277 million euros in 2020, as the company, which specializes in regional soft drinks, juice and cider, reported on Friday in Bad Vilbel near Frankfurt.

In terms of volume, Hassia sold 797 million liters, almost three percent less than in the previous year.

The family company did not provide any information about the profit.

"Restaurant closings, event bans, contact restrictions and severely restricted mobility have created difficult framework conditions under which all out-of-home consumption has noticeably suffered - and with it our brands," said company boss Dirk Hinkel.

In the retail sector, with a plus of 7.5 percent, they have grown more than twice as fast as the market.

Accordingly, drinks in returnable glass bottles and the national brand “Bionade” were particularly in demand.

The Hassia Group is one of the largest mineral springs in Germany and has taken over competitor Wüllner (Carolinen) for the New Year.

Among other things, the family business with around 1750 employees is strongly represented in Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia and East Germany, where it produces brands such as Vita-Cola, Thuringian Waldquell and Margon-Wasser.
