During an interview for France 24, the head of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (Minusma), Mahamat Saleh Annadif, said he was particularly worried about the deterioration of the security situation in central Mali. .

He deplored the worsening of intercommunal tensions by the jihadist leader Amadou Kouffa and by self-defense militias.

However, he believes that civil war can be avoided, and that actions of conciliation between communities accompanied by the UN give hope that these tensions can be calmed.

He spoke about the dialogue with Amadou Kouffa and the other jihadist leader, Iyad Ag-Ghali, who divides the French authorities and is Malian.

Mahamat Saleh Annadif underlines that the Malians, through the inclusive national dialogue 2019 in particular, have clearly decided that the path of dialogue is the only one capable of putting an end to the violence.

"The state of mind of Malians is that you have to talk to these people," he said.

He believes that the timetable for the transition, which foresees elections in a year, is realistic.

Mahamat Saleh Annadif affirms that the soldiers who hold power have succeeded in initiating a real dynamic with the rebel groups signatory to the Algiers agreements of 2015. He thus believes that a real implementation of these agreements could materialize by now the end of the transition period.
