Dresden (dpa / sn) - The education and science union (GEW) has warned of major risks from the planned opening of schools for all children and young people in Saxony before Easter.

On Friday, the head of the country, Uschi Kruse, referred to increasing numbers of infections and planned openings in other areas.

"If we openly or behind closed doors give up the consistent fight against corona, then the virus simply closes schools and day-care centers."

From the point of view of the GEW it would be better to wait until after Easter to open secondary schools.

"Including the holidays before and after the party, there would have been four weeks with little contact, which are now realistically exchanged for five days of classroom attendance," it said.

Up until now, only high school students and primary school students could attend classes in Saxony.

With hygiene measures, the schools are now to be gradually opened to all other students.

With the exception of the primary level, however, a test should be compulsory for pupils and for all staff.
