Mölln (dpa) - In a language school in Mölln in Schleswig-Holstein, a former student attacked a teacher with a knife and seriously injured him.

The background to the attack is still completely unclear, said the Lübeck public prosecutor Ulla Hingst.

According to Hingst, the attacker, a 32-year-old Syrian, is being investigated for an attempted homicide.

According to the information, he approached the 44-year-old teacher at school on Thursday at lunchtime and stated that he wanted to register for a new language course.

While the teacher was writing something down on a form, the accused is said to have suddenly attacked the 44-year-old with a knife and stabbed him in the head at ear level.

He was taken to a hospital.

There was no mortal danger for the 44-year-old, he was already able to leave the hospital, said Hingst.

According to the information, perpetrators and victims only knew each other by sight.

The attacker had not previously attended any courses with the victim, said Hingst.

The school was temporarily closed on Friday, according to a sign at the entrance.

The head of the facility could not be reached at first.

The mayor of the city, Jan Wiegels, did not want to comment on the incident.

He still doesn't know enough about it, he said, referring to the investigative authorities.

According to investigators, the accused has not yet commented.

An arrest warrant was issued against him in the late afternoon, as announced by Public Prosecutor Hingst.
