Bad Belzig (dpa / bb) - The planned free corona rapid tests for every citizen are a huge logistical challenge in the opinion of the Brandenburg districts.

"Somehow everything works, but suddenly offering everyone in Brandenburg a quick test once a week - that cannot be administered," said the chairman of the district assembly, Wolfgang Blasig (SPD), of the German press agency.

"But with the support of pharmacies, doctors' surgeries, et cetera and existing small centers, it will be possible to satisfy at least the needs that arise at the beginning."

The district council chief does not fear an "overrun".

"But we have to set up a testing regime," said Blasig, who is the district administrator for the Potsdam-Mittelmark district.

With the opening steps agreed by the federal and state governments, "tests will be necessary for some of the habits of the past that have become cherished" in a few weeks at the earliest if the new infection figures are developing well.

Blasig referred to the experiences of the state capital Potsdam, which has been offering free rapid tests in pharmacies and test centers since March 1st.

The federal and state governments decided on Wednesday at their Corona summit that every citizen should get at least one free quick test per week from next week.

The federal government wants to cover the costs.

Depending on the development of the number of infections, openings should be possible in small steps, including, under certain conditions, a visit to outdoor restaurants or to the theater and cinema with a quick or self-test from March 22 at the earliest.

The Brandenburg cabinet wants to decide on Friday.
