Since the beginning of the year, customs in Cologne have withdrawn cannabis seeds worth more than half a million euros.

The main customs office in Cologne announced on Thursday that almost 70,000 of the seeds had been discovered by the end of February.

What could have emerged from it is considerable.

"An area the size of around ten Bundesliga soccer fields could have been planted with the amount of seeds," said a spokesman.

"Assuming an average yield of 100 grams per cannabis plant, the total amount of marijuana would have been just under seven tons with a street sales value of almost 70 million euros."

According to the information, the seeds were discovered during controls of postal traffic from the Netherlands - in more than 5800 letters.

It is a massive increase in smuggling that is continuing.

The aim of the mail was private recipients all over Germany.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against them.
