Berlin (dpa) - New tracks, new points, renovated bridges: Deutsche Bahn plans to invest around 12.7 billion euros this year in the expansion and modernization of the rail infrastructure.

That would be half a billion euros more than last year and the previous record.

"We are building a new network for Germany and laying the foundation for the Deutschlandtakt," said Infrastructure Director Ronald Pofalla on Friday.

The construction sites should disturb the traffic on the routes as briefly as possible.

With faster, digital planning and early public participation, construction times are to be reduced by up to a quarter.

Deutsche Bahn is already attributing half of its improved punctuality to better construction site management.

One of the biggest projects this year is the renovation of the Würzburg-Hanover high-speed line on the Kassel-Göttingen section.

The tracks and points are to be completely renewed there between April and July.

In addition, renovation work is pending on the Hamburg-Berlin and Frankfurt / Main-Mannheim routes.

The railway did not say how much the respective construction projects cost.

The largest part of the sum, around 10.3 billion euros, comes from investment funds from the federal government, the federal states and the railways.

The remaining 2.4 billion euros of the total are the Group's own resources for maintenance.

In order to implement all projects, Deutsche Bahn claims to be increasing its staff: 2000 engineers and 1700 maintenance staff are to be recruited this year.

"Around 20 percent more employees are planned for the construction management of modern train stations alone," it said.
