The first conversation between Joe Biden and Ursula von der Leyen produced a considerable result, the establishment of a four-month truce in the air war that the EU and the United States have been waging since 2004. This 17-year-old dispute years has seen many twists and turns, including the authorization of the World Trade Organization to impose customs duties first in favor of the United States and then of the EU.

It is reciprocal accusations of subsidies to Airbus and Boeing which are at the origin of these bickering.

Ursula von der Leyen's statement after her interview with Joe Biden is both triumphant and optimistic.

The President of the European Commission spoke of excellent news and a new start.

The hatchet is not definitely buried since the trade truce is supposed to last four months, but in reality, it is a relief for the Europeans.

First, because they feared being left behind since the announcement of the agreement between the United States and the United Kingdom preceded the Euro-American announcement by 24 hours.

Then and above all because Joe Biden took a long time to choose;

Almost three weeks after his installation in the White House, he had decided to maintain the exceptional customs duties imposed in early January by Donald Trump against the EU.

This truce may be temporary by definition, but it bodes well for Europeans who are resuming themselves in being able to hope one day for a comprehensive trade agreement with the United States.

The third unsuccessful attempt of this type, the TTiP or transatlantic partnership for trade and investment, launched under Barack Obama, had been torpedoed by Donald Trump from the start of his mandate.
