Gimmeldingen (dpa / lrs) - In the Palatinate town of Gimmeldingen, day tourists have been blocked for several weeks since Friday.

This was announced by a city spokeswoman for Neustadt an der Weinstrasse.

The commune announced the ban a few days ago.

The reason is the nationally known almond blossom, which traditionally attracts thousands of visitors to Gimmeldingen.

The administration wants to prevent the rush into the district of Neustadt this year.

She justifies the ban with the protection against the further spread of the coronavirus.

The ban applies on weekends and public holidays for at least four weeks.

Violations can be punished with a fine of up to 25,000 euros.

Residents of Neustadt are exempt from the ban.

There are hundreds of almond trees in the wine village of Gimmeldingen.

On Friday it was initially quiet, said the spokeswoman.

"Lots of people are still working, and the weather is not as nice as it has been in the past few days."

She reminded that the authorities will monitor compliance with the lock and cordon off areas.

"Only together can a renewed increase in the number of infections in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse be prevented," said the municipality.

"This is also in the interest of everyone who urgently hope that the lockdown measures will be relaxed, for example retailers and restaurants."

Mayor Claudia Albrecht asked for understanding.

«Last year our village was overcrowded by tourist streams, which we definitely want to avoid this year out of consideration for the health of the guests and the residents.

We therefore ask everyone not to visit the flower this year, ”she emphasized.
