Gimmeldingen (dpa / lrs) - In the Rhineland-Palatinate town of Gimmeldingen, a multi-week visitor ban for day tourists begins today (9:00 a.m.).

The reason is the supraregional well-known almond blossom, which traditionally attracts thousands of visitors to the district of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse.

The municipality wants to prevent the rush this year.

She justifies the ban with the protection against further spread of the coronavirus.

The ban applies on weekends and public holidays for at least four weeks.

Violations can be punished with a fine of up to 25,000 euros.

Residents of Neustadt are exempt from the ban.

There are hundreds of almond trees in the wine village of Gimmeldingen.

"Only together can a renewed increase in the number of infections in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse be prevented," said the municipality.

"This is also in the interest of everyone who urgently hope that the lockdown measures will be relaxed, for example retailers and restaurants."

Many new, introduced chains of infection and a re-increase in the number of cases caused by irrationality would endanger this.
