The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said it issued a tsunami warning after a 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck east of North Island in New Zealand in the early hours of Friday morning (local time).

The US Geological Survey had initially stated that the quake's intensity was 7.3, before it adjusted down to 6.9, and said that the earthquake occurred at a depth of ten kilometers.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a tsunami was likely within 300 km of the epicenter.
