The IAEA will hold technical expert-level talks with Iran in April

Xinhua News Agency, Vienna, March 4 (Reporter Yu Tao) IAEA Director General Grossi said on the 4th that the IAEA will hold technical expert-level talks with Iranian representatives in early April.

Grossi said at a press conference held that day that after intensive consultations, the Iranian side accepted his proposal. The International Atomic Energy Agency will hold technical expert-level talks with Iranian representatives in early April.

Iran agreed to adopt a "focused and systematic" procedure to clarify some unclear issues related to Iran's nuclear activities.

Grossi said that the International Atomic Energy Agency's Board of Governors welcomed the understanding reached between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

He hopes that this effort will achieve satisfactory results before the next board meeting to be held in June.

Since the United States did not adopt Iran’s sanctions lifting measures within the specified time, the Iranian government announced on February 23 that in accordance with a bill passed by the Iranian parliament in December last year, the voluntary implementation of the additional protocol to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons will be suspended immediately. However, they said they would still abide by the "NPT" and safeguard agreements.

In July 2015, Iran reached a comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue with the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany.

According to the agreement, Iran promised to limit its nuclear program and the international community lifted sanctions against Iran.

As part of Iran’s commitments in the Iran nuclear agreement, Iran has adopted some voluntary measures related to nuclear activities in accordance with the additional protocol of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, giving the International Atomic Energy Agency more extensive authority to supervise Iran’s nuclear activities.

Suspension of the implementation of the protocol means that these measures will be suspended.

In May 2018, the US government unilaterally withdrew from the Iran nuclear agreement, and subsequently restarted and added a series of sanctions against Iran.

Since May 2019, Iran has gradually suspended the implementation of certain provisions of the Iran nuclear agreement, but promised that the measures taken are "reversible."

On February 21 this year, Grossi visited Iran. The two sides reached a provisional technical agreement for up to three months. During this period, the International Atomic Energy Agency will continue its necessary verification and supervision activities.
