Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The push for shorter summer holidays to close knowledge gaps for students after the Corona compulsory break has met with sharp criticism.

The Vice-Head of the Association of Education and Upbringing (VBE), Dirk Lederle, said on Thursday in Stuttgart: "It shows how much the Prime Minister has a clue about reality at school."

The teachers and most of the students are hard at work, even when they are not in school.

Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) had brought about shortened summer holidays.

"You could cut a little something on the holidays to catch up on lessons," said the Green Prime Minister to the "Mannheimer Morgen" (Thursday).

The Education and Science Union (GEW) criticized Kretschmann's initiative as being “too short”.

Country manager Monika Stein said: "We need support concepts for at least the next two school years, and in order for these to work, we need more staff."

The Kretschmann government could now once again show courage and foresight and decide to finance educational assistance and additional positions for teachers for the next school year.

Stein called for comprehensive rapid tests for the 4,500 schools, 130,000 teachers and 1.5 million students.

The discussion about the further opening of schools from next Monday is dangerous

The VBE explained that everyday school life with distance learning, face-to-face teaching and emergency care represented an enormous triple burden for the teachers.
