Russia and China objected to the issuance of a Security Council statement on the fighting in the Tigray region, saying that what is happening there is an internal matter.

For its part, the US delegate said that Washington urges Ethiopia to support an immediate cessation of fighting and calls for the immediate withdrawal of the Eritrean and Amhara forces, as an essential step for the solution.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, announced that Ethiopian and Eritrean forces have documented a series of serious violations that may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Tigray region.

Bachelet said that her office had established data on events that took place last November, indicating indiscriminate bombing operations in the cities of Muqli, Hamura and Adigrat.

The Commissioner for Human Rights confirmed the existence of information about serious violations, including massacres in the Aksum and Dingilat regions, committed by the Eritrean armed forces.

Bachelet also stressed the need for an independent investigation into the situation in the region.
