Neubrandenburg (dpa / mv) - The legal dispute over the violent death of six-year-old Leonie from Torgelow (Western Pomerania-Greifswald) goes into another round.

As a spokesman for the district court in Neubrandenburg announced on Thursday, the defense of the stepfather, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, appealed against the verdict on February 25 in a timely manner.

The Federal Court of Justice (BGH) will deal with the case again.

A year ago, the 29-year-old was sentenced to life imprisonment for “murder by omission”.

At that time, too, the man's lawyer had appealed.

The judges in Karlsruhe confirmed the "external crime", but reversed the judgment in parts and ordered the investigation of the motive for murder in a new trial.

The stepfather was then sentenced again to life imprisonment.

"That was a murder under cover by omission," explained Judge Henning Kolf, who led the appeal process.

The 29-year-old had severely abused the child and wanted to prevent her from reporting on the acts of violence.

The girl was found dead in the home of the family of five on January 12, 2019.

The defense had pleaded for six years imprisonment.
