Hanover (dpa / lni) - Lower Saxony has started corona vaccinations for police officers.

Field officials who have many contacts are classified as prioritized.

As Interior Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) said in Hanover on Thursday, around 9,000 of the more than 20,000 police officers will be vaccinated on the first train.

They were outside during demonstrations or in traffic, monitored compliance with corona requirements and did the usual fight against crime.

Because they come into daily contact and often come into contact with people, it is of great importance to protect them, stressed the minister.

As the first in the country, riot police in Hanover received the protective syringe with the vaccine Astrazeneca.

Not only do we have to talk about vaccination, we also have to vaccinate, said Pistorius and promised: "We will achieve very good results very quickly."

In the neighboring state of Bremen, around 1,500 police employees will also receive a vaccination appointment this week, as the police union (GdP) in the state district of Bremen announced.

«Anyone who is supposed to enforce sanctions cannot always protect themselves from Corona.

There is even a risk of intentional infection by criminals, ”said the Bremen GdP state chairman Lüder Fasche.
