Facebook will once again allow political ads in the United States, lifting a ban imposed after a presidential election in November under high tension, one of the many measures taken by the platform to fight disinformation in the era of Donald Trump .

From this Thursday, advertisements "political, electoral and on social subjects" will be accepted again, announced the Californian group Wednesday.

“We put in place this ban after the November ballot to avoid confusion or abuse” during the vote count, Facebook recalls in a statement.

The period turned out to be as chaotic as the social network and many observers feared.

They should always be checked

The former US president and many of his supporters spread false accusations of electoral fraud, which culminated in the January 6 riots, when hundreds of protesters stormed the Capitol in an attempt to prevent Joe's victory from being certified. Biden.

However, political advertisements should always be verified and include messages indicating that they are “paid for by” such and such a person or organization.

Facebook keeps all ads in an archive that can be accessed online for searchers who wish to view them.

The social network, which recently announced its intention to reduce the visibility of political content in general, and to refocus on family, friendly or commercial interactions, also plans to "examine in the coming months how these ads operate on the service to see if further changes are needed ”.

Accounts have been "purged"

Google, the leader in digital advertising just ahead of Facebook, also re-authorized political ads last month.

The two platforms also purged themselves of numerous extremist or conspiratorial accounts that had repeatedly broken the rules on incitement to violence or disinformation.

Donald Trump himself has been permanently ousted from Twitter, and Facebook's supervisory board is due to make its decision soon on the future of the Republican billionaire's profile on the mainstream social network.

It is currently suspended indefinitely.
