Lübeck / Flensburg (dpa / lno) - The Chamber of Skilled Crafts Lübeck and Flensburg registered 5811 new training contracts last year, 6.8 percent less than in 2019. "The minus is of course a setback for the craft," commented the President of the Chamber of Crafts Schleswig-Holstein, Ralf Stamer.

«In previous years we have succeeded in keeping our number of trainees stable and even increasing them slightly.

This positive trend was suddenly stopped by Corona. "

A chamber spokeswoman explained that career orientation suffered massively from the pandemic.

The schools had been closed for a long time, many events such as trade fairs and contact exchanges were canceled, as had company visits to schools.

As a result, it was very difficult to motivate especially those students to an apprenticeship who particularly need such support.

Thanks to great efforts in recruiting young people, it was possible to prevent a further decline in the number of new apprenticeship contracts, said Chamber President Stamer.

"We quickly focused on expanding our own digital activities and offers in vocational orientation and were able to reach many young people and their parents even in a crisis situation."

The development in the individual trades was very different.

There were declines among other things among motor vehicle mechatronics, hairdressers and bakery salespeople.

Carpenters and joiners, on the other hand, increased slightly.

For the 2021 apprenticeship year, around 1000 vacant apprenticeship positions are currently listed on the stock exchanges of the two Schleswig-Holstein chambers of crafts.

“There is a great need for qualified specialists.

Our companies want to train, especially in times of Corona, ”says Chamber President Stamer.
