Oberstdorf (dpa) - Record champion Eric Frenzel sneaked out of the finish area completely exhausted and had "anger in his stomach": The German Nordic combined athletes are threatened with a fiasco at the home World Cup.
Defending champion Frenzel, Fabian Rießle and their teammates had no chance in the battle for medals in Oberstdorf in the gold triumph of 19-year-old Austrian Johannes Lamparter.
As on the two days before, no German athlete made it onto the podium in the Allgäu - not even the cross-country skiers in the relay.
In the team of female ski jumpers, the era of national coach Andreas Bauer is coming to an end.
In the combined competitions, defending champion Frenzel took fourth place as the best athlete of the German Ski Association, just like in the competition on the normal hill.
Since the first World Championship individual on the large hill in 2001, the German athletes had always made it to the podium in this competition - until the title fights at home.

“The world championships are of course about the medals.
I would have loved to have fought, ”said Frenzel.
His jersey marked “World Champion 2019” was a reminder of past successes.
Jarl Magnus Riiber from Norway won silver, while Akito Watabe from Japan won bronze.
Right behind Frenzel, Rießle crossed the finish line in fifth.

In a weak jump round that morning, Rießle was the best German in tenth place.

Frenzel was another 19 seconds behind Rießle.

Bauer has accompanied the jumpers since the first World Cup hour in 2011/2012 and has been responsible for many victories, world championship titles and two Olympic medals in recent years.
It is not yet known who will follow the Oberstdorfer and accompany the jumpers around Katharina Althaus to the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing in 2022.
Norway's superstar Therese Johaug celebrated her third gold medal at this World Cup with the relay.
