March 04, 2021 There are 9 pre-trial detention orders, three in prison and six under house arrest in the operation of the Police, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor of Palmi.

All, considered employers, corporals and fixers, are accused in various ways of illicit intermediation and exploitation of work and fictitious registration of assets, in the Piana di Gioia Tauro.

Investigators from the Reggio Calabria Flying Squad and the Gioia Tauro Commissariat, assisted by the Caserta Flying Squad and the crews of the Crime Prevention Department, searched properties.

The investigation


The investigation started after some episodes related to the gang-ganging phenomenon that took place between June 2018 and June 2019. The "Rasoterra" investigation, the Reggio Calabria mobile team and the GioiaTauro police station shed full light on some events of severe labor exploitation in the countryside of the Plain of numerous migrants of sub-Saharan origins housed in the shantytown of San Ferdinando, dismantled in March 2019. 



Migrants were exploited in companies and citrus crops, at a grueling pace.

Thanks to the precious testimonies and the wiretaps, a criminal picture emerged.

It was the employers, corporals and fixers, according to the investigators, who recruited, used, hired and employed low-cost non-EU workers.

Taking advantage of their state of extreme economic need, the suspects made them work in the fields for a few euros and for many hours
